DOUGHNUTS? It's about so much more than doughnuts y'all. It's about GROWTH! For those of y'all interested to know why, we're Ryland & JP & WE are pumped to share the short(ish) story of Scout's Doughnuts!

Two people smiling and holding cups behind a table of assorted baked goods, with a sign that reads 'Scouts' and a black-and-white photograph on the wall.

We launched straight into corporate careers after college and quickly learned two things:

1) we want our vocations and personal lives to be integrated, both contributing to and compounding upon each other;

2) we want to do as much life together as possible with each other and our kids.

Fast forward eight years and we were still trying to figure out what this meant! For several years we had known that we wanted to start our own business to lead the integration of our vocations and personal lives; and given the opportunity to do that we wanted our future business to meet certain criteria:

Four people, including two children and two women, are working in a commercial kitchen with baked goods such as muffins and donuts on the counter. One child is sitting at a metal table, while others are preparing or decorating pastries.

1

Be something our whole family could participate in.

2

Cultivate growth in Our lives, in the life of our team and community, and the life of our city.

3

Foster relationships. (Because we're not meant to grow alone! Life truly is SWEETER TOGETHER!)

Five young people in a commercial kitchen taking a selfie, some are smiling and laughing, with two of them holding food, possibly fried chicken.

"Ok, ok, ok. I get all the intentionality, but how did you land on doughnuts?"

@youwiththegreatquestion, I (Ryland) have been running with the same group of guys for many years and a couple of the guys routinely complained about there not being any good local doughnuts in Greenville. Probably the 10th time this came up on a run I shared it with JP and we just couldn't shake the idea. After a year of market research, recipe testing and technique building we brought our first box of doughnuts ever to Bridge City Coffee in February 2022!

@everyoneelseoutthere

We can't wait to share a doughnut with y'all! Life truly is SWEETER TOGETHER!

p.s. for the real hardcore who are still reading...

Why "Scout's"? - JP and I have always loved the narrative of To Kill a Mockingbird and the character of Jean Louise ("Scout") in particular. Her innocence and grace to ignore social prejudices or expectations in order to see people for who they were, as people, with stories, has always appealed to us. We hope that our business can also be a space where all are welcomed and seen for who they are.

What should we call these things? - We actually love the simple term doughnut! We want these to simultaneously bring a lot of nostalgia and blow your mind!
